Xpeng has planned at least 5 EREVs, report says

Xpeng is making significant strides in the electric vehicle market with the development of its first Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) model. The EREV model will be based on the X9 MPV and is slated to go into mass production in the second half of this year, as reported by local media sources.

This development marks a strategic shift for Xpeng, as the company announced the Kunpeng extended-range system on November 16, 2024. The Kunpeng system is designed to provide vehicles with an impressive combined range of up to 1,400 kilometers and a battery range of up to 430 kilometers. Additionally, the system features a fast-charging capability, allowing the battery pack to charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 12 minutes.

Xpeng has ambitious plans for its EREV lineup, with at least five models in the pipeline, including sedans and SUVs. The company’s E, F, and H platforms are all set to feature EREV models, which are expected to be launched between 2026 and 2027. Moving forward, Xpeng aims to offer both EREV and Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) variants for the majority of its new models.

Founded in 2014, Xpeng initially focused on offering BEV models but has now embraced the growing popularity of EREVs in China. The decision to introduce EREV models aligns with the shifting dynamics of the EV market, where hybrid models have gained traction among consumers.

As the EREV market continues to expand, Xpeng’s strategic decision to include EREV models in its product lineup is well-timed. With multiple automakers, including Li Auto, Aito, and Leapmotor, already demonstrating the appeal of EREV models, Xpeng is poised to capitalize on this trend.

During an earnings call in March, Xpeng’s management revealed plans to launch multiple new models, including BEV models and models equipped with the Kunpeng extended-range system, in the second half of this year. The company aims to offer a diverse range of products, covering a price range from RMB 100,000 to RMB 500,000 by the end of 2026.

In conclusion, Xpeng’s foray into the EREV market represents a strategic move to cater to evolving consumer preferences and market trends. With a strong lineup of EREV models on the horizon, Xpeng is well-positioned to solidify its presence in the competitive electric vehicle landscape.
