Xpeng, a prominent player in the electric vehicle (EV) market, is gearing up to introduce an extended-range version of its P7+ mid-to-large sedan. This move signifies a robust new product cycle for the company’s extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) lineup. The extended-range P7+ is slated for launch next year and will come equipped with a battery that supports a 5C charging rate, offering an expected battery range of 400 kilometers. This development was reported by local media outlet Cailian, citing insider sources.
Recently, Xpeng’s Chairman and CEO, He Xiaopeng, revealed at the IAA Mobility auto show in Munich, Germany, that all upcoming models from the company will feature both pure-electric and extended-range powertrains and will be rolled out globally. This strategic move underscores Xpeng’s commitment to catering to a diverse range of customer preferences and expanding its market reach.
In a regulatory catalog released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on September 10, Xpeng’s filing for an EREV variant of its G7 SUV was disclosed. This marks the company’s second EREV model to be listed, following the X9 MPV that made its debut last month. The G7, which hit the market in July, boasts Xpeng’s in-house developed Turing AI chip for smart driving, offering up to 2,250 TOPS of computing power. The G7’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) variant starts at RMB 195,800 ($27,490) and provides a CLTC range of 602 to 702 kilometers.
Founded in 2014, Xpeng initially focused on BEVs like many of its domestic competitors. However, with the rising popularity of EREVs in China, the company has expanded its lineup to include hybrid models to tap into a broader market segment. At a tech event in November 2024, Xpeng unveiled its extended-range technology, the Kunpeng Super Electric System, which promises a combined range of up to 1,400 kilometers with a pure battery range of 430 kilometers – the longest-range extended-range system in the industry.
In line with its EREV expansion strategy, Xpeng also filed for an EREV variant of the X9 earlier in August, with plans to launch the model in the fourth quarter. This announcement generated optimism about sales prospects, leading to a surge in Xpeng’s Hong Kong-listed shares. Additionally, a hybrid version of the G6 SUV was spotted in July, further bolstering Xpeng’s EREV portfolio.
Xpeng had previously outlined plans to introduce at least five EREV models, including sedans and SUVs, as reported by domestic media outlet 36kr in March. With a strong focus on innovation and sustainability, Xpeng continues to make significant strides in the EV market, positioning itself as a key player in the transition towards electric mobility.
The future looks bright for Xpeng as it continues to expand its EREV lineup and solidify its presence in the global EV market. Stay tuned for more updates on Xpeng’s latest developments in the electric vehicle industry.
