Xpeng, a prominent Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, is making strategic moves to reposition its G6 SUV in the market. This decision comes in the wake of the recent launch of the more powerful G7 SUV by the company.
According to a report by local media outlet AutoPix, Xpeng is actively working on cost-cutting measures for the G6 model. The company aims to reduce unit costs for the current G6 variants by an estimated amount ranging from RMB 10,000 to RMB 20,000. This cost reduction initiative is part of a larger plan to enhance the competitiveness of the G6 in the EV market.
The upcoming lower-cost version of the G6, with the project code name changed to F30be from F30b, is slated to enter production in the fourth quarter of this year. Xpeng plans to optimize production costs by replacing some parts suppliers while maintaining the quality standards of the vehicle. The design and functionality of the G6 are expected to remain largely unchanged during this repositioning process.
The rationale behind repositioning the G6 stems from the overlap in pricing between the G6 and the newly launched G7 SUV. With the G7 offering superior specifications at similar price points, Xpeng is strategically adjusting the G6 to better differentiate it within its SUV lineup.
In addition to the G6 and G7 models, Xpeng is set to introduce a new SUV codenamed D03 at its Wuhan factory in 2026. This new model will be positioned similarly to the Mona M03 in the SUV market and will feature extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants. The Mona M03, Xpeng’s lowest-priced model, has been a significant contributor to the company’s deliveries in the first half of 2025.
The Wuhan factory project, announced by Xpeng in 2021 with a planned annual capacity of 100,000 vehicles, will play a crucial role in the production of the new D03 SUV and other models in the company’s lineup. While there have been no recent updates on the progress of the Wuhan factory, Xpeng’s existing manufacturing facilities in Guangzhou and Zhaoqing continue to support the company’s production needs.
With a dynamic market environment and evolving consumer preferences, Xpeng’s repositioning of the G6 and expansion of its SUV lineup reflect the company’s commitment to innovation and strategic growth in the competitive EV market.
