ZF Launches Mass Production of AKC Rear-Wheel Steering System in China

ZF, a leading automotive technology company, has officially announced the commencement of mass production of its Active Kinematics Control (AKC) rear-wheel steering system at its Zhangjiagang plant in China. The second-generation AKC technology will be integrated into models from top Chinese new energy vehicle manufacturers, enhancing driving dynamics and safety.

The AKC system offers significant advantages such as compatibility and customizability, leading to improved chassis dynamics, driving comfort, and safety while reducing costs for automakers. This marks a major milestone for ZF as the Zhangjiagang facility becomes the first global production site for AKC technology outside of Europe.

The Zhangjiagang plant, which started construction in November 2022, is poised to produce a wide range of chassis components, including control arms, knuckles, tie rods, and stabilizer links. It is projected to achieve sales of around 2 billion yuan by 2027.

With nearly two decades of experience in rear-wheel steering technology, ZF has developed advanced control algorithms and vehicle dynamics control. The AKC system, with its modular software, enables swift integration for automakers to meet performance and functional requirements. It can provide up to +/-12 degrees of rear-wheel steering, enhancing maneuverability at low speeds and stability at high speeds, particularly beneficial for electric vehicles with extended wheelbases.

As the automotive industry embraces software-defined vehicles, intelligent chassis systems like ZF’s AKC play a crucial role in enhancing driving experiences. By transferring steering forces to the rear wheels, the AKC system improves agility during low-speed turns and stability at high speeds, offering drivers exceptional handling capabilities.

Since 2013, ZF has been a frontrunner in the commercial application of AKC technology, widely used in premium vehicles. With the rising demand for superior driving experiences in NEVs, major Chinese brands like IM Motors and Dongfeng Motor’s MHERO have adopted the AKC system. By the end of 2023, ZF had sold 1.9 million sets of AKC systems globally, solidifying its position as a leader in rear-wheel steering technology.

The second-generation AKC system features significant mechanical enhancements and expanded compatibility, including CAN communication interfaces for use in heavier vehicles like pickup trucks and full-sized SUVs.
