12,000 miles with a BMW i5: is this the ultimate electric estate?

New Review: BMW i5 Touring

As the night fell, the cold crept in, and my electric BMW i5 Touring was showing 213 miles of range left (equivalent to 2.6mpkWh from 100%). Despite the chilly weather, I knew that fast chargers are expensive, so I had to make a decision on how to proceed.

I contemplated whether to conserve energy by slipstreaming behind a coach or truck to make it home, or to stop for a quick top-up at a fast charger. Opting for the latter, I pulled into the pricey Shell chargers at Tot Hill services. However, my attempt to charge failed due to a taut cable, leaving me frustrated with wasted time.

Feeling annoyed, I decided to continue driving cautiously, drafting behind a coach for efficiency, and eventually made it home with only 5% battery remaining. On that journey, I managed to achieve 3.2mpkWh, utilizing 81KWh of energy and enjoying a bag of Haribo per 261 miles.

Final Thoughts on the BMW i5 Touring

After several months of having the BMW i5 Touring on the Autocar fleet, I must say it has been a mostly enjoyable experience. This electric version of BMW’s 5 Series Touring combines luxury with performance, offering a spacious and powerful driving experience.

With 81.2kWh of usable battery and 592bhp, the i5 Touring accelerates from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and boasts a top speed of 143mph. Despite its weight of 2425kg, it handles well and maintains the essence of a 5 Series BMW with a touch of M performance.

While it may not be a true M car, the BMW i5 Touring impresses with its blend of electric power and executive luxury, making it a compelling option for those seeking a high-performance electric vehicle.
