2026 Volvo S90 looks great – but you probably can’t have one

Volvo Cars recently unveiled the new 2026 Volvo S90 plug-in hybrid, boasting it as the most elegant and comfortable 90 series model yet. With nearly 50 miles of all-electric range and a host of high-end technology and design updates, the new S90 is poised to make a statement in the luxury sedan market. However, for English-speaking consumers, it seems that they may not have the opportunity to experience this new offering from Volvo.

Reports have surfaced indicating that Volvo Cars has decided against bringing the new S90 sedan to the US, Canada, the UK, and other English-speaking markets. This decision is disappointing for those who have appreciated the comfort and performance of the SPA S90 in the past. Unfortunately, the declining popularity of sedans, coupled with ongoing tariff issues, has influenced Volvo’s global strategy, leading them to focus on markets where demand remains strong.

Erik Severinson, Chief Product and Strategy Officer at Volvo Cars, emphasized the importance of the S90 in the brand’s product portfolio for certain Asian markets. Together with the fully electric ES90, the new S90 aims to cater to customers who prioritize safety and desire a large, sleek Volvo sedan.

The marketing for the new S90 highlights its plug-in hybrid nature, positioning it as an electric car with a backup plan. Offering 80 kilometers of fully electric range on a single charge, the S90 allows for zero tailpipe emissions during daily commutes. Volvo’s data suggests that nearly half of the distance covered by their latest plug-in hybrid models is powered solely by electricity.

While the new S90 will be available for order in China this summer, it remains to be seen if it will reach other markets in the future. The decision to exclude English-speaking regions reflects Volvo’s strategic shift towards markets where the brand can thrive.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding its availability in certain markets, the new S90 represents a significant step forward for Volvo in terms of technology and design. With a focus on sustainability and luxury, the S90 embodies Volvo’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction.

In conclusion, while English-speaking consumers may miss out on the new S90, Volvo’s decision to prioritize other markets underscores the brand’s adaptability and global vision. As Volvo continues to evolve and expand its product lineup, the new S90 stands as a testament to the brand’s dedication to excellence and innovation.
