Mercedes to launch by-wire steering and yoke wheel in 2026

Mercedes-Benz is set to introduce its first car with by-wire steering technology next year, which will allow for the replacement of the traditional steering wheel with a sleek yoke design. This innovative system replaces the mechanical connection between the steering and the front wheels with an electronic connection, providing quicker responses and a wider range of feedback for drivers.

One notable feature of this by-wire steering system is its ability to adjust the steering sensitivity at different speeds. For instance, the steering quickens at low speeds to reduce the physical effort required for tasks like parking. Additionally, the elimination of the need for multiple wheel rotations to achieve full lock has enabled Mercedes to introduce a flat-bottomed yoke design, similar to the one found in the updated Lexus RZ.

This new design not only frees up knee-room for passengers, making it easier to enter and exit the vehicle, but also improves visibility of interior display screens. Mercedes has highlighted that this new steering system enhances the interaction with the rear-wheel-steering feature available in its flagship models like the S-Class and EQS saloons. The EQS has served as a test platform for this technology, hinting that it may be the first model to feature the by-wire steering system upon its upcoming facelift.

In addition to enhancing driving dynamics, Mercedes has also addressed concerns about the steering feel on rough road surfaces. By removing the physical linkage between the steering wheel and the front end of the car, the new system significantly reduces the impact of road imperfections on the driver’s experience. Moreover, the by-wire steering system is equipped with redundant sensors and cables, ensuring that the vehicle remains operable even in the rare event of a system failure.

Overall, Mercedes-Benz’s foray into by-wire steering technology marks a significant step towards a more advanced and intuitive driving experience. With the upcoming launch of their first car equipped with this innovative system, Mercedes is poised to set new standards for steering precision and driver engagement in the automotive industry.
