Europe’s battery-electric vehicle (BEV) market experienced a significant surge in February, with Tesla leading the pack despite a drop in deliveries. The data, analyzed by Autovista24 journalist Tom Hooker, reveals some interesting trends in the European electric vehicle market.
In February, BEV sales in Europe saw a remarkable 25.6% increase, reaching a total of 166,319 units. This represented a gain of 33,924 deliveries compared to the previous year. The growth in BEV volumes continued from January, with a cumulative increase of 30.3% across the first two months of the year, totaling 331,890 registrations.
On the other hand, plug-in hybrid registrations (PHEVs) faced challenges in the market, declining by 0.9% in February with 72,421 sales. This marked the lowest monthly figure for PHEVs since August 2024. The total PHEV deliveries between January and February stood at 149,149 units, reflecting a decline of 2.5%.
In terms of market share, BEVs showed a significant increase compared to the previous year, capturing 69.7% of the market in February, up by 5.3 percentage points. In contrast, PHEVs saw a decrease in market share from 35.6% to 30.3%.
Tesla emerged as the top performer in the BEV segment, with the Tesla Model Y leading the sales charts in February with 9,173 registrations. Despite a 54.4% drop in deliveries compared to the previous year, the Model Y accounted for 5.5% of total BEV sales in the month. It was followed closely by the Tesla Model 3, which secured the second spot with 6,972 registrations, representing a 14.2% decrease from the previous year.
Renault’s Renault 5 achieved a record result in February, landing in third place with 6,264 deliveries. The Volkswagen ID.4 followed closely in fourth place with 6,219 registrations, showing a significant increase in volumes year on year.
The European electric vehicle market also saw strong performances from brands like Skoda, VW, Kia, Audi, and Citroen, showcasing the increasing diversity and competitiveness in the segment.
In the PHEV category, the Volvo XC60 maintained its position as the top-selling model for the fifth consecutive month, with 4,180 registrations in February. The Ford Kuga and VW Tiguan also showed strong performances, reflecting the stable standings in the PHEV market.
Overall, the European electric vehicle market witnessed notable shifts and developments in February, with Tesla leading the BEV segment and Volvo dominating the PHEV category. With increasing competition and advancements in technology, the future of electric vehicles in Europe looks promising.
