Hyundai Mobis Company, the main automotive components unit of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group, recently unveiled a groundbreaking driver assist feature aimed at enhancing highway safety. The company introduced a rear safety control system designed to alert drivers of approaching vehicles from the rear and automatically adjust the vehicle’s speed to maintain a safe distance and prevent collisions.
This innovative system combines rear-side radars and front cameras with advanced driving control technologies. It is activated when the driver engages the Smart Cruise Control (SCC) function while driving on the highway. If the system detects a vehicle driving too closely behind, within a distance of ten meters or less, it will first issue a warning through sound or visual alerts on the instrument cluster. If the situation persists, the vehicle will autonomously increase its speed to ensure a safe following distance.
The rear side radars, positioned on both sides of the rear bumper, monitor the movement of the vehicle behind, while the front camera identifies the lane and the vehicle ahead to facilitate safe acceleration. While several global automakers already offer collision warning systems, Hyundai Mobis emphasized that their system goes a step further by allowing the vehicle to autonomously adjust its speed to avoid potential collisions.
In addition to the rear safety control system, Hyundai Mobis is actively working on expanding the scope of autonomous control for defensive driving against rear vehicles. The company is currently developing a lane-changing function to navigate dangerous situations and an acceleration control feature that enables the vehicle to accelerate independently.
Jung Soo-kyung, head of Hyundai Mobis’ automotive electronics business unit, expressed the company’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of mobility users by providing intelligent solutions for both front-end and rear-end safety concerns. He stated, “We will actively protect the safety of mobility users by providing solutions that can intelligently handle not only front-end safety but also dangerous situations caused by rear vehicles while driving.”
