BYD, a leading Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker, recently launched the Shark hybrid pickup truck in Brazil, expanding its presence in the South American country. The company’s executive expects the Shark to sell between 10,000 and 15,000 units annually in Brazil, positioning it as a top 5 midsize pickup in the country.
The Shark, based on BYD’s DMO platform, boasts impressive specifications. It measures 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm. Powered by dual electric motors, the Shark delivers a combined output of over 430 horsepower, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds with a top speed of 160 km/h. The pickup is equipped with a Blade battery with a capacity of 29.58 kWh, providing an NEDC battery range of 100 kilometers and a combined NEDC range of 840 kilometers.
BYD’s Shark joins the company’s lineup of electric vehicles in Brazil, where it has already sold over 60,000 EVs this year. The introduction of the Shark marks BYD’s entry into the competitive pickup truck market in Brazil, offering consumers high quality and superior performance.
The Shark has already garnered significant interest in Brazil, with pre-orders exceeding expectations. Priced at 379,800 reais ($66,620), the Shark aims to challenge established models like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger in the market. Customers have reserved about 1,000 of the 1,500 available Shark pickups since pre-orders began on October 3, demonstrating strong demand for the model.
BYD’s success in Brazil is evident in its sales figures, with the company selling 51,203 vehicles in the first nine months of 2024, representing a more than 700 percent increase compared to the same period last year. With ambitions to break into the top five in overall sales rankings in Brazil by 2027, BYD is committed to establishing itself as a key player in the Brazilian automotive market.
The launch of the Shark in Brazil follows its successful debut in Mexico and Panama earlier this year. BYD’s expansion into new markets with innovative electric vehicles like the Shark underscores the company’s dedication to promoting sustainable mobility and driving the adoption of electric vehicles globally.
