The automotive world lost a legend on Monday with the passing of Mike Valentine, the creator of the iconic Valentine V1 radar detector. Valentine, 74, leaves behind a lasting legacy in the industry, having revolutionized the way enthusiasts stay ahead of police speed traps since 1992.

Valentine’s journey in the radar detector business began early in his career when he co-founded Cincinnati Microwave, Inc. in 1974, which later evolved into the well-known brand Escort. However, Valentine’s vision for the future of radar detectors differed from his colleagues, leading him to part ways and establish his own company.

The hallmark of Valentine’s V1 radar detector was its superior detecting quality and innovative feature of directional arrows indicating the source of inbound signals. This unique design set the V1 apart from its competitors, along with Valentine’s commitment to continuously upgrading the device to keep pace with evolving police enforcement methods.

Over the years, Valentine released eight revisions of the V1 before introducing the V1 Gen Two in 2020, showcasing his dedication to product improvement and customer satisfaction. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the industry, Valentine was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the University of Cincinnati in January 2023.

Tributes poured in for Valentine from enthusiasts and industry experts, acknowledging his impact on the radar detector community. The Vortex Radar YouTube channel expressed gratitude for Valentine’s creation, praising the device’s performance, arrows, and collaborative approach to feature development.

Valentine’s unexpected passing at his home in Cincinnati was confirmed by Cincinnati.com, with no cause of death disclosed. He is survived by his wife Margaret of 51 years and his daughters Martha and Anna. The automotive community mourns the loss of a visionary innovator and expresses gratitude for Valentine’s lasting contributions.
