Volkswagen to Launch Updated ID Models in 2026
Volkswagen has announced plans to launch heavily updated versions of its ID models starting in 2026 as part of a major upgrade to the MEB architecture on which they are based. This news was confirmed by VW R&D boss Kai Grünitz at the LA motor show, along with other exciting developments in the pipeline.
Grünitz revealed that the upcoming updates to the ID range will bring “huge improvements” in terms of design, performance, battery costs, and new functionality. The new look of the ID models is said to be inspired by the ID 2all concept car, designed by Andreas Mindt to reflect a friendlier and more classic VW aesthetic reminiscent of iconic Golf models from the past.
The production version of the ID 2all concept car is set to debut in late 2025 or early 2026, marking a significant visual shift for Volkswagen. Grünitz emphasized that this launch will signify a new era for the brand, showcasing a noticeable change that will resonate with customers and position VW as a “loved brand” once again.
In addition to the ID 2all, Volkswagen will also introduce an SUV variant of the model, as well as a GTI version that promises to deliver both performance and the traditional GTI DNA that enthusiasts have come to love. Grünitz teased that the electric GTI set to launch in 2026 will offer some surprises that will impress fans of the iconic Golf GTI.
Further advancements are being made with the SSP (Scalable Systems Platform), an electric car base that is considered crucial for the future of the Volkswagen Group. Grünitz highlighted the recent joint venture with Rivian, stating that VW will benefit from Rivian’s expertise in electric architectures and over-the-air software updates, making SSP a versatile platform for a wide range of vehicles.
With these exciting updates and developments on the horizon, Volkswagen is poised to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle market in the coming years. Stay tuned for more updates on the latest innovations from VW as they continue to redefine the automotive industry.
