Renault’s iconic 5 Turbo is set to make a comeback in 2026 with a modern twist, promising to be the “ultimate hot hatch” in the Renault lineup. The new Renault 5 Turbo 3E will be an electric powerhouse, boasting more than 500bhp thanks to two in-wheel electric motors. This makes it the most powerful production car in Renault’s history, delivering an exhilarating driving experience with agile handling like no other.
The new model, based on a bespoke platform, will feature next-generation in-wheel motor technology that allows for precise control of each wheel. This innovative drivetrain eliminates the need for an electronic differential or simulated gearshift, giving the wheels the freedom to perform at their best. With a 0-62mph time of under 3.5 seconds, the performance of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E is described as “breathtaking” by product boss Bruno Vanel.
The electric hot hatch will sport a bespoke carbon-composite body with aerodynamic design elements for efficiency and cooling. Flared wheel arches, a rear spoiler, and side air intakes to cool the motors are just some of the features that enhance the car’s performance capabilities. The production version of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E will maintain the concept’s unique proportions, featuring a tubular chassis with a roll-cage in the rear.
The concept version of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E showcased three drift modes for different levels of playfulness, including the ability to perform doughnuts. With a manual handbrake as a key feature, Renault aims to retain this aspect in the production model to uphold the project’s ethos. The car’s extreme positioning and bespoke content suggest a limited production run with a price tag exceeding £100,000.
As Renault’s performance division, Alpine is expected to play a role in the development of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E. The possibility of producing the car at Alpine’s Dieppe factory further solidifies its ties to the brand’s high-performance heritage.
