Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer, has issued a recall for 239,382 electric vehicles due to potential issues with rearview camera displays. The recall affects a wide range of Tesla models, including the Model 3 sedan, Model S sedan, Model X crossover, and Model Y crossover.
The issue stems from circuit boards in the affected vehicles that could short out, leading to a loss of the rearview camera image on the central display screen. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has highlighted that this malfunction could increase the risk of accidents while reversing, as drivers rely on the camera feed for visibility.
Although Tesla estimates that only 2% of the recalled vehicles are affected, the company has identified 887 related warranty claims and 68 field reports. Fortunately, there have been no reported collisions, injuries, or fatalities linked to this issue.
Tesla’s recall is part of a broader trend in the automotive industry, with numerous automakers, including Ford, General Motors, Ram Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Honda, BMW, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Volkswagen, Kia, and Hyundai, conducting similar recalls for faulty rearview camera displays. The mandatory inclusion of rearview cameras in vehicles built after 2018 has led to a focus on improving display technology to meet safety standards.
Failure to comply with recalls can result in significant penalties, as seen in Ford’s $165 million fine in 2024 for failing to address a rearview camera recall promptly. To address the issue, Tesla is offering a free over-the-air software update to affected vehicle owners. Additionally, the company will monitor vehicles for circuit board failure and replace computers as needed, all at no cost to the customer.
Affected Tesla owners can expect to receive notification by mail on March 7th. Alternatively, they can contact Tesla’s customer service department at 1-877-798-3752 and reference recall number SB-25-001 for further information.
As Tesla continues to prioritize safety and compliance with regulations, this recall serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing potential issues promptly to ensure the well-being of drivers and passengers on the road.
