BYD, a prominent Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant, is set to make its mark in the South Korean passenger car market with a brand launch scheduled for January 16. This move comes after the company’s successful entry into Japan’s market, showcasing its commitment to expanding its presence in Asia.

The company initially entered the South Korean market in 2016, focusing on the production of commercial vehicles such as forklifts, buses, and trucks. However, BYD’s latest announcement signals its strategic shift towards entering the passenger car segment in the country.

In November 2024, BYD Korea confirmed its plans to release passenger car brands in the South Korean market, with the official entry slated for early 2025. The company has already selected six dealer partners who will be responsible for selling BYD passenger cars and providing customer service in the country.

BYD follows a dealer system in the 99 countries and territories it operates in, emphasizing its commitment to establishing strong partnerships for sales and service operations globally. This approach has proven successful as BYD continues to expand its market reach and compete with local automotive giants in various regions.

The upcoming entry into South Korea’s passenger car market will position BYD against established local players, further solidifying its reputation as a key player in the global automotive industry. In July 2022, the company entered Japan’s passenger car market, challenging industry giants like Toyota, Honda, and Nissan on their home turf.

In 2024, BYD reported impressive sales figures, with a total of 4,272,145 NEVs sold, marking a 41.26% increase compared to the previous year. The company also saw a substantial growth in overseas sales, with 417,204 units sold in 2024, representing a 71.86% year-on-year increase.

With its continuous focus on innovation and expansion, BYD is set to make a significant impact in the South Korean passenger car market, further solidifying its position as a global leader in the electric vehicle industry. Stay tuned for the official brand launch event on January 16 as BYD unveils its latest offerings to South Korean consumers.
