Tesla is gearing up to introduce a software update for its Chinese customers that will bring Full Self-Driving (FSD) features similar to those available in the US market. According to a report by Bloomberg, the update is set to roll out in the coming days and will enable Tesla owners in China to utilize driver-assistance features on city streets.
The software update will empower Tesla vehicles to navigate city streets, including exiting ramps and intersections, recognizing traffic signals, making turns, and handling lane and speed changes. These advanced features will be accessible to customers who have purchased the FSD software package for RMB 64,000 ($8,830). It is important to note that while Tesla markets these features as self-driving, they still require constant human oversight and intervention.
Tesla has included cautionary language in the software update, indicating that the effectiveness and timing of certain features may vary depending on the model and configuration of the vehicle. The city streets feature will initially be available on select models and will be gradually expanded to more vehicles over time.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, had previously mentioned during an earnings call that the company anticipated receiving regulatory approval to launch FSD in markets outside the US, including Europe and China, by the end of 2024. The AI team at Tesla had also announced plans to introduce FSD in China and Europe in the first quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approval.
In China, all Tesla vehicles come equipped with the free Basic Autopilot (BAP) software. However, customers have the option to purchase the FSD software for a one-time fee. Additionally, Tesla offers the Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) package in China at half the price of FSD.
Musk highlighted some challenges faced by Tesla in implementing FSD in China, such as navigating bus lanes with restricted access times and limitations on training algorithms due to data transfer restrictions. Despite these hurdles, Tesla remains committed to expanding its FSD capabilities in the Chinese market.
As Tesla continues to innovate and enhance its autonomous driving technology, the upcoming software update for Chinese customers represents a significant step towards realizing the vision of fully autonomous vehicles. With the promise of advanced features and improved functionality, Tesla owners in China can look forward to a more seamless and sophisticated driving experience.
