An $18,000 small EV with big ambitions

Honda has launched a new electric vehicle that is not only affordable but also offers impressive range and interior space. The N-ONE e is Honda’s first electric kei car, priced at just over $18,000. This mini EV is a game-changer in the market, especially considering the average price of new cars in the US is nearly $52,000.

The N-ONE e is based on Honda’s retro-looking kei car, the N-ONE, and is designed for passenger use rather than commercial purposes. With a starting price of Â¥2.7 million ($18,300), this electric vehicle is set to hit the Japanese market on September 12.

What sets the N-ONE e apart is its impressive range of up to 295 km (183 miles), thanks to its 29.6 kWh battery. This range surpasses that of the Nissan Sakura, Japan’s best-selling electric car. While it may not match the range of some other EVs on the market, it is more than sufficient for daily commutes in Japan.

One of the challenges Honda faced in developing the N-ONE e was ensuring enough interior space for everyday use. To tackle this, the company designed a thinner battery pack that sits flat beneath the floor, allowing for a more spacious interior.

Honda already has a strong presence in the kei car market with the N-Box, the best-selling vehicle in Japan. With the launch of the N-ONE e, Honda aims to further solidify its position in the mini EV segment, which accounts for 40% of new car sales in Japan.

As competition heats up with brands like BYD, Toyota, and others gearing up to launch mini-EVs, Honda is confident that its new electric vehicle will stand out with its range, interior space, and overall performance. The market for mini EVs is expected to grow, and Honda is well-positioned to capture a significant share of this segment.

Overall, the Honda N-ONE e is a promising addition to the EV market, offering affordability, range, and practicality in a compact package. With its launch in Japan, Honda is set to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle industry.
