Audi Will Cut Options Because Having 100 Steering Wheels Is Excessive

Luxury car shopping comes with a plethora of options to choose from, and Audi is known for its extensive list of extras. However, the German automaker is looking to streamline its customization process for future models. The goal is to reduce the number of options available to customers while focusing on enhancing the quality of the features that matter most.

Audi’s CEO, Gernot Döllner, highlighted the need to simplify the customization process by offering fewer but higher-quality choices. For example, he mentioned that Audi currently offers over 100 different steering wheel options across its lineup, which is excessive. By limiting the number of variations, Audi aims to elevate key touchpoints within the interior, such as the steering wheel, to make them more luxurious and worthy of the brand’s Four Rings logo.

This “less is more” approach is designed to benefit both Audi and its customers. By reducing the complexity of options, Audi can focus on creating premium details that enhance the overall driving experience. This shift in strategy was recently showcased in the Concept C, a sports car concept that features high-end materials like anodized aluminum for physical controls and a metal badge on the steering wheel.

The Concept C provides a glimpse into Audi’s future design direction, both inside and out. The company is moving towards a more minimalist approach in its cabin design, aiming for clarity and simplicity without unnecessary elements. This design philosophy will be applied to Audi’s entire portfolio, starting with the production version of the Concept C set to launch in the coming years.

In addition to refining its design language, Audi is also making changes to its lineup by discontinuing its cheapest models, the A1 supermini and Q2 subcompact crossover. This move will position the A3 as the brand’s most affordable model, with a new entry-level electric vehicle set to debut in 2026.

Overall, Audi’s focus on reducing complexity, enhancing quality, and refining its lineup reflects a strategic shift towards a more streamlined and premium automotive experience. Customers can expect to see these changes reflected in future Audi models, offering a more refined and luxurious driving experience for discerning buyers.
