MG Unveils Cyber X Electric SUV at Shanghai Motor Show

MG has taken the wraps off the Cyber X, a rugged and boxy electric SUV, at the prestigious Shanghai motor show. This new model marks the second addition to the brand’s Cyber line-up, following the Cyberster roadster that was introduced last year. The Cyber X features a distinctive silhouette, illuminated badges, and full-width LED light bars at the front and rear, setting it apart from MG’s existing SUV range.

Targeted towards lifestyle-minded buyers, the Cyber X is part of MG’s strategy to appeal to a younger demographic, initially focusing on the Chinese market before expanding globally. In fact, the Cyberster is already available for purchase in the UK, demonstrating MG’s commitment to expanding its presence in key markets.

Underneath its rugged exterior, the Cyber X is built on parent company SAIC’s latest E3 electric platform, making it one of the first MG models to benefit from this new architecture. SAIC describes the E3 platform as its “first fully electric, system-level architecture,” designed to accommodate a wide range of vehicle types and drivetrain configurations.

One of the key features of the E3 platform is SAIC’s innovative CTB (cell-to-body) construction, where the battery structure contributes to the overall rigidity of the vehicle’s body, resulting in improved efficiency and weight reduction. Additionally, the Cyber X will be equipped with MG’s new Zebra 3.0 operating system and digital user interface, offering advanced voice recognition and connectivity features.

Future MG models based on the E3 platform will be powered by Horizon Robotics’ J6 chip, supporting advancements in driver monitoring, navigation, and semi-autonomous functions. While specific details regarding the Cyber X’s drivetrain and battery specifications have not been disclosed, it is clear that MG is committed to delivering cutting-edge technology in its upcoming models.

With plans to launch eight new models across sports cars, saloons, and SUVs in the next two years, MG is poised to make a significant impact in the automotive industry. The Cyber X represents the brand’s bold vision for the future, combining style, performance, and innovation in a single package.
