BYD Ventures into Tablet Production, Expanding its Tech Portfolio

BYD, known for its dominance in the electric vehicle market, has now ventured into the production of tablets in-house. The move showcases BYD’s determination to not only revolutionize the EV industry but also diversify its technological offerings.

The unveiling of the new tablets by BYD on social media was accompanied by the caption: “unlimited excitement, just one touch away.” This marks the company’s first foray into tablet manufacturing as it expands its presence in new tech spaces. While BYD is renowned for its cost-effective electric cars and innovative “Blade” EV batteries, which are utilized by major car manufacturers like Tesla, Ford, BMW, and Toyota, its capabilities extend far beyond these products.

Since the 1990s, BYD has been manufacturing batteries initially used for cellphones but now powering electric vehicles worldwide. The company’s in-house capabilities are truly impressive, as they produce nearly every component for the popular electric hatch, the Dolphin, with the exception of tires and windows.

Moreover, BYD has emerged as one of China’s largest contract manufacturers, with its subsidiary producing smartphones, laptops, vehicle electronics, and more. The company is also a key supplier for Apple, assembling iPads and iPhones. Although specific details about the new tablets remain undisclosed, BYD has hinted that they will debut in the upcoming Tai 7, a hybrid SUV from its Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand.

The integration of these tablets in the Tai 7 will enhance infotainment features, offering multi-screen viewing, connectivity options, and more, catering to the preferences of Chinese consumers for advanced in-car entertainment. Following the recent production of the first mass-produced Tai 7, BYD has announced that the hybrid SUV will be available for sale in the fourth quarter. The Tai 7 is the second model under BYD’s sub-brand, following the successful launch of the Tai 3 in March.

In February, BYD introduced the God’s Eye smart driving system in 21 of its popular vehicles, showcasing the company’s commitment to pioneering advancements in technology beyond just electric vehicles. The launch of these tablets underscores BYD’s ambition to lead the future of tech innovation.
