BYD, a leading Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker, has expanded its presence in Africa by entering the passenger car market in Benin. The company officially announced its entry into the West African nation’s auto market at a brand launch event in Cotonou on April 24, in collaboration with local distributor CFAO Group.
During the event, BYD unveiled two battery electric vehicle (BEV) models for the local consumers – the Yuan Plus SUV and the compact hatchback Seagull. The launch event also saw the opening of an after-sales service center and showroom in Cotonou, showcasing BYD’s commitment to providing top-notch services to its customers in Benin.
Yao Shu, BYD’s director of automotive sales in Africa, highlighted that the entry into the Benin market signifies a strategic move to further develop the company’s business in the African region. With this expansion, BYD has now established its presence in 16 countries and regions across Africa, demonstrating its strong commitment to the continent’s growing NEV market.
Over the past year, BYD has introduced its models in several African countries, including Tunisia, Ecuador, Madagascar, and Ethiopia. The company’s decision to cease the production and sales of vehicles powered solely by internal combustion engines in March 2022 reflects its shift towards focusing on plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and BEVs.
In March 2025, BYD achieved impressive sales figures, with 377,420 NEVs sold, marking a 24.78% year-on-year increase. Additionally, the company set a new record by selling 72,723 vehicles overseas in the same month, showcasing its strong global presence and popularity.
Looking ahead, BYD continues to expand its global footprint, with plans to establish a NEV plant in Cambodia. The first phase of the plant is expected to commence production in the fourth quarter of this year, with an annual capacity of 10,000 units.
With its innovative NEV models, commitment to sustainability, and expanding global reach, BYD is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of the automotive industry, particularly in the fast-growing African market.
