The BYD Shark pickup truck made a significant impact in the global market in 2024, exporting over 10,000 units in its first year of availability. December alone saw 3,410 units exported, bringing the full-year total to 11,038 units. The success of the Shark marks a milestone for BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) in the competitive pickup market.

The exact manufacturing location of the BYD Shark remains undisclosed, although some reports suggest it is produced in Zhengzhou, Henan province, China. Interestingly, the pickup is not available in the Chinese market, emphasizing its focus on international markets.

BYD officially introduced the Shark in Mexico on May 14, 2024, with subsequent launches in other markets such as Brazil and Australia. The model is offered in two versions, GL and GS, with starting prices of 899,980 Mexican pesos ($43,430) and 969,800 Mexican pesos, respectively.

Based on BYD’s DMO platform, the Shark boasts impressive specifications. It measures 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm. The pickup is powered by dual electric motors, generating a total of over 430 horsepower and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 160 km/h.

Equipped with a blade battery pack with a capacity of 29.58 kWh, the BYD Shark offers an NEDC battery range of 100 kilometers and a combined NEDC range of 840 kilometers. Its fuel efficiency is notable, with an NEDC low charge fuel consumption of 7.5 L per 100 km, providing a 40 percent fuel saving compared to traditional internal combustion engine pickups.

In addition to Mexico, BYD has expanded the availability of the Shark to other markets like Panama, Brazil, Cambodia, and Australia, where it is marketed as the Shark 6 in certain regions. This global reach highlights BYD’s commitment to offering sustainable and high-performance vehicles to a diverse range of customers.

The BYD Shark’s success in 2024 sets a solid foundation for continued growth and innovation in the electric pickup segment. With its advanced technology, impressive performance, and eco-friendly design, the Shark is poised to make a lasting impact in the international automotive market.
