Changan Nevo launches E07 SUV that can transform into pickup truck

Changan Nevo, a sub-brand of Chinese auto giant Changan Automobile (SHE: 000625), has recently introduced the E07 SUV, a versatile vehicle that can transform into a pickup truck. This innovative move aims to address the growing demand for electric pickup trucks in China, especially at a time when there are strict restrictions on such models in the country.

The E07 was unveiled at a launch event, marking Nevo’s second SUV model after the Q05. It comes in both extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) versions, offering customers a range of options to choose from. One of the standout features of the E07 is its transformability, allowing it to seamlessly transition from a regular SUV to a pickup truck configuration for increased load capacity.

The decision to design a vehicle that can serve as both an SUV and a pickup truck is a strategic workaround to navigate the limitations imposed on pickup truck models in China. Due to regulatory restrictions, pickup trucks are categorized as light trucks and are subject to stringent regulations compared to other passenger vehicle categories like sedans, SUVs, and MPVs.

Currently, only a handful of Chinese automakers, including Great Wall Motor, JAC, Geely, and Changan, produce pickup truck models. By introducing the E07 SUV with pickup truck capabilities, Nevo aims to cater to a niche demographic that requires electric pickup trucks but faces limitations in the market.

The Nevo E07 BEV is available in four versions with varying price points, starting from RMB 199,900 ($28,080) up to RMB 319,900. On the other hand, the EREV variant comes in three options with prices ranging from RMB 209,900 to RMB 299,900. The model boasts dimensions of 5,045 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,695 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,120 mm.

In terms of performance, the E07 EV offers impressive acceleration capabilities, with a single-motor version featuring rear motors of 165 kW and 252 kW, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds or 6.7 seconds, respectively. The dual-motor version accelerates even faster, reaching 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.96 seconds.

Additionally, the E07 is equipped with two battery options: a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with a capacity of 70.54 kWh and a lithium ternary battery with a capacity of 89.98 kWh, providing ranges of 551 kilometers and 651 kilometers, respectively. The EREV variant also offers single and dual motor options, with a hybrid version featuring a LFP battery pack with a capacity of 39.05 kWh and a combined range of 1,130 kilometers on a full tank of fuel and charge.

Moreover, the Nevo E07 incorporates Changan’s advanced intelligent driver assistance system, with top-tier BEV variants featuring Nvidia Orin X chips and LiDAR technology. Nevo, a relatively new brand launched by Changan in August, has made significant strides in expanding its product lineup, with plans to introduce a total of 10 models globally by 2025.

In conclusion, the Changan Nevo E07 SUV represents a forward-thinking approach to meeting the demand for electric pickup trucks in a market constrained by regulatory limitations. With its innovative design, versatile features, and advanced technology, the E07 is poised to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle segment in China and beyond.
