China has seen a significant increase in the number of electric vehicle (EV) charging points installed across the country, with a total of 11.43 million charging points in operation as of September 2024. This marks a nearly 50% rise from the previous year, with 2.84 million new charging points added in the first nine months of 2024.
The surge in EV charging infrastructure comes as China continues to promote the adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs), including electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. With an estimated 28 million NEVs currently on the road in China, there is approximately one charging point for every 2.5 NEVs. The National Energy Administration (NEA) data reveals that 66.67 billion kWh of energy were consumed for charging NEVs in the first three quarters of 2024, reflecting a year-on-year increase of over 12%.
The robust growth in EV charging infrastructure aligns with the increasing sales of NEVs in China. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), NEV sales surged by 36% to reach 7.392 million units in the first nine months of 2024.
As China continues to prioritize the development and adoption of electric vehicles, the expansion of EV charging infrastructure plays a crucial role in supporting the widespread use of NEVs and reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuel-powered vehicles. The country’s efforts to enhance the accessibility and efficiency of EV charging facilities contribute to a more sustainable transportation ecosystem and drive the transition towards a greener future.
