China’s electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) has recently introduced a new series of battery products, marking a significant advancement into the “multi-power era”. The company’s Super Tech Day event unveiled the Freevoy dual-power battery, the Naxtra sodium-ion battery, and the second-generation Shenxing superfast charging battery, as well as an integrated 24V start/stop Naxtra battery for heavy-duty trucks.
CATL claims that the Freevoy dual-power battery enables customised user experiences beyond the limitations of single technology paths. With dual-power architecture and advanced self-forming anode technology, the Freevoy battery offers a more stable and reliable power supply, especially for vehicles with advanced autonomous driving capabilities.
The Freevoy battery also features “dual-electric range extension” technology, which intelligently allocates power from two energy zones based on driving status and habits. CATL has released three dual-power solutions catering to various chemical systems, including Sodium-LFP Dual-Power Battery, LFP-LFP Dual-Power Battery, and NCM-LFP/NCM-NCM Dual-Power Battery, each tailored to meet specific user needs and driving scenarios.
In a press statement, CATL mentioned that the innovative architecture from dual power to multi power will not be limited to electric passenger vehicles but will also be implemented in electric buses, heavy-duty trucks, airplanes, ships, as well as industrial and commercial applications. This will accelerate the industrialisation of renewable energy across various scenarios and expedite the application of cutting-edge technologies such as solid-state batteries.
The Naxtra battery, claimed to be the world’s first mass-producible sodium-ion battery, addresses resource limitations and strengthens the foundation of the new energy industry. The Naxtra passenger EV Battery boasts an energy density of 175Wh/kg, supporting a driving range of 500km and offering over 10,000 charge cycles, thereby significantly reducing maintenance costs.
CATL’s second-generation Shenxing superfast charging battery boasts a 12C peak charging rate and 1.3MW peak charging power, capable of charging from 5% to 80% SOC in just 15 minutes at -10°C, doubling the industry’s current fastest charging capability.
The Naxtra 24V Heavy-Duty Truck Integrated Start-Stop Battery offers an eight-year service life and deep discharge capabilities, leading commercial vehicles into a lead-free era.
In addition to these advancements, CATL has partnered with China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) to establish a nationwide battery swapping network across the country, further enhancing the accessibility and infrastructure for electric vehicles in China.
Overall, CATL’s new battery products signify a significant leap into the multi-power era, offering innovative solutions for a wide range of electric vehicles and driving scenarios.
