Ford has issued a recall for 149,449 Bronco SUVs due to concerns regarding rear shock absorbers that may corrode and shed parts. This recall specifically affects 2021-2024 Badlands models and models with the Sasquatch off-road package. The long flange rear shocks in these configurations are susceptible to corrosion between the external reservoir, mounting flange, and shock body, potentially causing the reservoir to detach from the vehicle.
The specific location of the corrosion poses a risk by eroding a weld that holds the external reservoir in place. If the reservoir separates and falls off, it could not only create a hazard for other road users but also lead to the shock absorber malfunctioning due to fluid loss. Drivers may notice symptoms such as a bouncy ride, unusual noises, or leaking fluid near the rear wheels if the external reservoir detaches. Despite receiving 551 warranty claims related to this issue, Ford has not reported any crashes or injuries resulting from it.
Ford is currently working on a solution to address this problem. Owners will be notified by mail starting on February 3 to inform them of the issue, with a follow-up notification to be sent once the remedy is available. Owners who incur expenses for related repairs will be eligible for reimbursement. For further information, owners can contact Ford’s customer service department at 1-866-436-7332 or visit the automaker’s recall site, with the reference number for this recall being 24S64.
This recall is the second recent one involving detaching suspension components for the Ford Bronco. In October of the previous year, Ford recalled 2,416 Broncos and Ranger pickup trucks due to potentially missing or improperly torqued retention nuts that could have caused front upper control arms to separate from their mounting points.
