How we bought a classic Lancia and drove it back to the UK

I came across a listing for a classic Lancia Fulvia Coupé 2+2 in Italy that immediately caught my eye. The picturesque scene in which the car was situated, surrounded by the beauty of Campanian countryside, sparked my imagination. As a lifelong fan of Italian cars and a particular admirer of Lancia, I was intrigued by the Fulvia’s unique design, V4 engine, and its lesser-known rally successes.

The Fulvia Coupé, first introduced in 1965, featured stylish in-house design by Piero Castagnero, inspired by the elegant lines of Riva speedboats. Its mechanical layout was equally intriguing, with a V4 engine mounted ahead of the front axle, driving the front wheels through a four-speed gearbox. The car’s compact size, lightweight construction, and nimble handling made it a joy to drive.

The particular Fulvia I found was a 1974 1.3S model, part of the final iteration of the Fulvia series. Despite its age, the car was in excellent condition, with no signs of rust or mechanical issues. I decided to bring it back to Scotland, where I could enjoy driving it on the scenic roads of the border country.

After a thorough inspection and some necessary maintenance work by a Lancia specialist, the Fulvia was ready for the road. The car’s lively engine, precise gearbox, and agile handling made it a pleasure to drive on the winding roads of the Scottish countryside. Its compact dimensions and responsive steering made it a joy to navigate through tight corners and twisty sections.

In terms of practicality, the Fulvia proved to be a manageable classic car to own and maintain. With a supportive network of specialists, a market for spare parts, and the backing of the Lancia Motor Club, keeping the Fulvia in top condition was relatively straightforward. The car’s fuel economy, insurance costs, and overall value made it a financially viable classic car to own.

Overall, my experience with the Lancia Fulvia has been nothing short of delightful. Its combination of dynamic performance, timeless aesthetics, and rich rally heritage has made it a cherished addition to my collection. As I continue to enjoy driving and maintaining this classic Italian gem, I am reminded of the enduring appeal of the Lancia brand and the unique charm of the Fulvia.
