Hyundai Inster: better than a Renault 5?

Electric cars are becoming increasingly popular in Europe, with most small cars now equipped with electric propulsion systems. Hyundai has been at the forefront of this trend with the introduction of the Hyundai Inster, a compact hatchback available exclusively in electric form. The Inster lineup consists of three variants: the Inster 01, Inster 02, and the SUV-like Inster Cross.

The Inster 01 comes with a 42 kWh battery, while the Inster 02 and Cross models are equipped with a larger 49 kWh pack. I recently had the opportunity to test drive the Inster 02, which features a motor producing 85.5 kW (115 PS) and 147 Nm (108 lb-ft) of torque. Despite its modest power figures, the Inster delivers adequate performance for city and motorway driving.

In terms of design, the Hyundai Inster stands out with its unique proportions and distinctive styling elements. The car’s Kei-car inspired looks, including cute and retro lighting shapes, give it a playful and distinctive appearance. Inside, the Inster features clever design touches like a recurring plus sign motif and a square theme that is evident throughout the interior and exterior of the car.

One of the standout features of the Inster is its spacious interior, with ample room for passengers in the front and rear seats. The rear seats are equipped with a sliding function to provide extra legroom, and the flat floor design adds to the overall comfort of the cabin. The boot is well-shaped and deep, with storage space for cables located under a false floor.

Charging the Inster is convenient, with a maximum charging speed of 85 kW allowing for a full charge in seven and a half hours via a 7.4 kW home wall box. The car offers a claimed maximum range of 229 miles, making it suitable for everyday use. With its narrow width and agile handling, the Inster is well-suited for urban and rural driving conditions.

Interestingly, the Hyundai branding is not prominently displayed on the Inster, leading to some confusion among onlookers. The car is actually produced by Hyundai’s subsidiary, Gwangju Global Motors (GGM), using the HMG K1 platform shared with other models in the Group.

Overall, the Hyundai Inster impresses with its charming looks, spacious interior, and practicality for daily use. With a starting price of GBP23,505 for the Inster 01, GBP26,755 for the Inster 02, and GBP28,755 for the Inster Cross, the Inster offers a compelling option for those in the market for a compact electric car.
