Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) unveiled its latest hybrid powertrain system at the ‘Next-Gen Hybrid System Tech Day’ in Seoul. This new system is set to power a new generation of hybrid vehicles for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands, starting with the Hyundai Palisade SUV. The company claims that this enhanced hybrid system offers improved power and efficiency compared to its predecessor, aiming to enhance the driving and ownership experience for customers globally.

The new hybrid transmission system features two integrated motors that can be paired with a wide range of internal combustion engines, allowing for optimized performance and fuel efficiency across different vehicle classes. Various electrification-focused technologies have also been incorporated to enhance driving performance, refinement, and ride comfort.

Dong Hee Han, head of HMG’s Electrified Propulsion Test Center, highlighted the innovative nature of the new hybrid system, combining the company’s expertise in engine, transmission, and hybrid system development with electrification technology from its electric vehicles. This integration aims to provide customers with eco-friendly vehicles that offer superior performance.

The new hybrid transmission system includes a P1 motor for starting, battery energy generation, and propulsion assistance, as well as a P2 driving motor for propulsion and regenerative braking. This dual-motor setup improves power, performance, fuel efficiency, and overall driving experience by reducing noise and vibration.

HMG mentioned that the new hybrid transmission system can be paired with ICE engines across its lineup, offering a wide range of system outputs from low-100 PS to mid-300 PS, suitable for various vehicle sizes. The system also incorporates convenience features like Stay Mode, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, and Smart Regenerative Braking, typically found in the group’s EVs.

The new hybrid transmission system is initially being used with a gasoline 2.5-litre turbo engine in the Hyundai Palisade, followed by a 1.6-litre turbo hybrid powertrain in the new Santa Fe. By reassigning tasks to the P1 motor and adopting a high-efficiency cycle optimized for hybrids, the turbo hybrid powertrain minimizes power losses and improves fuel efficiency.

The gasoline 2.5 turbo hybrid system in the Hyundai Palisade delivers maximum fuel efficiency of 14.1 Km/litre, a system output of 334 PS, and torque of 460 Nm. These improvements offer greater fuel efficiency, increased power, and enhanced torque compared to previous models.

In conclusion, Hyundai’s new generation hybrid transmission system represents a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in the automotive industry. This advanced system is set to redefine the hybrid vehicle market, offering customers a more efficient and refined driving experience.
