Hyundai’s most affordable electric SUV is a hit

Hyundai’s most affordable electric SUV, the Inster EV, is making waves in Germany as one of the top-selling electric cars in the region. With prices starting under $30,000, the compact EV has quickly gained popularity since its launch earlier this year.

In the first half of 2025, the Inster EV secured its place as the best-selling electric small car in Germany. It has consistently ranked among the top 10 best-selling EVs in the region, with over 1,000 registrations each month. In July alone, the Inster EV saw another 1,130 registrations, bringing its total to 6,300 registrations for the first seven months of the year.

Ulrich Mechau, President & CEO of Hyundai Motor Germany, expressed his delight in the Inster EV’s success, stating, “We’re delighted that Germany’s best-selling electric small car is a Hyundai.” He emphasized the importance of offering affordable electric vehicles with an excellent price-performance ratio.

Hyundai’s strong performance in Germany is attributed to the growing demand for EVs in the region. Electric vehicles now account for 28% of Hyundai’s registrations in Germany, a significant increase from the previous year. The company is outpacing the German electric vehicle market, which accounts for about 17.5% of registrations.

The Inster EV, priced at 23,900 euros ($28,000), offers a driving range of up to 370 km (230 miles) on the WLTP cycle, fast charging capabilities (10% to 80% in 30 minutes), and advanced features like vehicle-to-load (V2L). Hyundai’s EV lineup in Germany includes the Inster EV, Kona Electric, IONIQ 5, and soon the refreshed IONIQ 6 and new IONIQ 9.

In the overall European market, the Inster EV ranked as the 19th best-selling EV in June with 3,322 registrations, outperforming competitors like the Dacia Spring and Toyota bZ4X. While the Inster EV is sold as the Casper Electric in South Korea, it is not set to launch in the US.

For US consumers, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 remains one of the most affordable EV options on the market, with leases starting at just $179 per month. The IONIQ 5 recently had its best sales month in the US yet, with 5,818 units sold in July.
