Mallaghan, a global airport ground support equipment (GSE) manufacturer, has recently unveiled North America’s first fully electric refrigerated catering truck designed specifically for the aviation industry. The Mallaghan CT6000E was co-developed with International Motors (formerly Navistar) and made its debut at Logan International Airport in Boston. The event was attended by notable figures such as Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, State Representative Adrian Madaro, and Boston City Councilor Gabriela Coletta-Zopata.
According to Joe Griffith, Chief Commercial Officer at Mallaghan, the launch of the CT6000E marks a significant milestone for both the company and the aviation industry in North America. The electric catering truck showcases Mallaghan’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and supporting partners in achieving greener, safer, and more efficient aviation operations.
Based on the International eMV chassis, the CT6000E features a 33,000 lb. GVWR, a direct-drive electric motor with 1,737 lb-ft of peak torque, and a 210 kWh li-ion battery pack providing 135 miles of range. The truck also includes a robust auxiliary system powered by two AGM 12V batteries that charge through the main 609V high voltage system.
To enhance its functionality as ground support equipment, the CT6000E is equipped with various new technologies aimed at improving vehicle efficiency and operator safety. These include an advanced aircraft-controlled approach system (CAS) to reduce aircraft damage, a 360-degree Birds Eye camera system with an onboard hard drive, and on-board telemetry.
The CT6000E will be operated by premium airline catering company DO & CO, serving international clients such as American Airlines, Delta, gategourmet, IAG, Southwest Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Servair.
While this electric catering truck is a first for North America, Mallaghan has previously introduced similar vehicles based on the Volvo FL Electric platform. With airports presenting an ideal use case for battery-electric vehicles due to short distances, limited speeds, and extreme loads, the transition to electric ground support equipment is crucial in reducing fossil fuel emissions in the aviation industry.
