Isuzu Motors Limited, a Japanese automaker, recently announced a partnership with US engine manufacturer Cummins Inc to incorporate integrated battery-electric powertrains into its next-generation F-series medium-duty trucks. These zero-emission trucks are set to debut in the North American market in 2027.
The collaboration between Isuzu and Cummins began in 2019 under the Isuzu Cummins Powertrain Partnership (ICPP), focusing on the development of next-generation battery-electric powertrains for trucks. Prototypes of medium-duty trucks equipped with BEV powertrains have been undergoing testing with a major fleet customer in North America since 2022 in preparation for the upcoming market launch.
Isuzu also revealed its partnership with Accelera, Cummins’ division specializing in alternative fuels powertrains, particularly electrified powertrains and hydrogen fuel cells. The collaboration aims to enhance the development of related components such as e-axles.
The automaker is currently constructing a new truck manufacturing plant in South Carolina, USA, where the new battery-powered F-series trucks will be produced starting from 2027. These trucks will utilize locally-sourced Accelera powertrains. The plant is expected to reach an annual production capacity of 50,000 units by 2030, anticipating a growing demand for zero-emission commercial vehicles in the region over the next decade.
The partnership between Isuzu and Cummins signifies a significant step towards sustainable transportation solutions, aligning with the increasing global focus on reducing carbon emissions and transitioning towards electric mobility. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in the automotive industry.
