Komatsu, the Japanese equipment giant, has recently added an electric mini excavator to its lineup of battery-powered construction equipment. The new Komatsu PC20E-6 electric mini excavator is designed to offer a full day of work from a single charge, making it a practical and cost-effective option for construction projects.

The design of the PC20E-6 was based on data collected from over 40,000 working days of similarly-sized diesel excavators. Komatsu found that in 90% of its global customers’ deployments, mini excavators are used for less than 3.5 hours per day. This data informed the decision to create a machine with a 23.2 kWh battery pack and an 11 kW high-torque electric motor, providing up to four hours of continuous operation.

For situations where four hours of runtime is not sufficient, the PC20E-6 comes with onboard charging options for 230V and 3kW charging power, with an optional external DC quick charger for 400V and 12 kW charging. This ensures minimal downtime and maximizes productivity on the job site.

To ease concerns about the longevity and maintenance of the electric driveline, Komatsu includes its E-Support maintenance program with every PC20E-6. This program offers free scheduled maintenance by a Komatsu-trained technician, a 3-year/2,000-hour warranty on the machine, and a 5-year/10,000-hour warranty on the electric driveline. The company estimates that the battery should last for up to 10 years, providing peace of mind for customers investing in electric construction equipment.

While official pricing has not been released yet, Komatsu plans to begin series production of the PC20E-6 in October. The company’s commitment to providing reliable and efficient electric construction equipment showcases its dedication to advancing electrification in the industry.

Overall, the Komatsu PC20E-6 electric mini excavator offers a practical and efficient solution for construction projects, with a focus on maximizing uptime and reducing operating costs. Its performance, reliability, and innovative design make it a valuable addition to Komatsu’s growing electric product range.
