Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the all-electric GLC at IAA Mobility in Munich, showcasing a next-gen electric powertrain that underpins this popular model from the German luxury automotive brand. With this new electric vehicle, Mercedes aims to regain momentum in the EV market.
The all-electric GLC comes with a 94-kWh battery pack on an 800-volt system, enabling DC fast-charging from 10–80% in approximately 24–25 minutes. The vehicle can add up to around 160 miles in a 10-minute stop, based on WLTP estimates. Two powertrain options are available at launch: the GLC 400 4MATIC with dual-motor all-wheel drive, producing 483 hp and 596 lb-ft of torque, and the GLC 300+ with a single rear motor rear-wheel drive, delivering 369 hp and 372 lb-ft of torque.
A unique feature of the electric GLC is the two-speed transmission on the rear axle, with gear ratios of 11:1 for first gear and 5:1 for second gear. This setup enhances launch performance, towing capabilities, and high-speed efficiency, which is uncommon in most road EVs. The vehicle offers a range of approximately 350–376 miles, with U.S. EPA ratings expected closer to launch.
When it comes to charging infrastructure, the GLC is expected to align with Mercedes’ plan to introduce native NACS ports in North America by 2025. The vehicle also provides access to Superchargers through an official adapter. Towing capacity for the electric GLC reaches up to 5,291 lbs, with 20.1 cubic feet of cargo space (rear seats up) and 61.4 cubic feet (seats folded), along with a 4.5 cubic foot frunk.
In terms of interior technology, the electric GLC offers an optional 39.1-inch “Hyperscreen” that spans from A-pillar to A-pillar, featuring matrix backlighting with over 1,000 LEDs and zone dimming. The standard configuration includes a significant display area for essential information.
Unlike the previous EQC model, which was based on an ICE platform, the electric GLC is built from the ground up as an EV. It features a longer wheelbase, new sheet metal, and a bespoke interior design. The 800-volt system supports 330-kW peak DC fast-charging, and the vehicle’s drive units are paired with a two-speed rear e-axle for balanced performance.
Optional AIRMATIC air suspension and rear-axle steering enhance comfort and maneuverability for those willing to pay extra. The electric GLC is equipped with a 94 kWh battery pack, providing up to 713 km (443 miles) of range based on the WLTP cycle, with an EPA range expected closer to 350 miles.
In terms of design, the electric GLC retains its recognizable appearance while introducing optional pixel-lit grille and signature lighting elements for a modern touch. Mercedes aims to compete with other premium electric vehicles in the market, such as the new BMW iX3.
Overall, the electric GLC represents a significant step forward in Mercedes’ EV lineup, showcasing impressive specs and advanced technology. While the timeline for its release in late 2026/early 2027 may seem delayed compared to competitors, Mercedes is poised to make a strong entry into the electric vehicle market with the all-electric GLC.
