Rivian has issued a recall for 17,260 R1T pickup trucks and R1S SUVs due to potential issues with their headlights in cold weather conditions. The recall specifically affects 2025 model year vehicles, with approximately 2,905 units believed to be experiencing the problem. The issue arises from incorrectly configured parts from a supplier finding their way into the headlight assembly, affecting vehicles built between April 29, 2024, and February 3, 2025.
Owners may encounter a situation where one or more headlights fail to illuminate upon vehicle startup in cold temperatures, accompanied by an error message indicating “Low beam lights not working. Service low beams soon” in the digital gauge cluster. This poses a safety concern as it does not meet the legal requirements outlined by FMVSS 108, potentially leading to reduced visibility and an increased risk of accidents.
Despite the issue, Rivian has not received any reports of crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to the problem. The automaker identified the issue on December 20, 2024, initiated an investigation, and promptly reported the findings to the NHTSA on February 6, 2025. To address the issue, Rivian will be replacing the headlight control module on affected vehicles.
Owners will receive notification of the recall via mail starting on or before March 28, 2025. For more information, consumers can reach out to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or contact Rivian directly at 888-748-4261. The recall reference number for Rivian is FSAM-1612, while the NHTSA campaign number is 25V-085.
It is worth noting that the Rivian R1T and R1S models were refreshed for the 2025 model year, featuring a revised headlight system with adaptive lighting units. The R1T was even recognized as the only pickup truck to receive the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS.
In conclusion, Rivian is taking proactive measures to address the headlight issue in cold weather conditions to ensure the safety and satisfaction of its customers.
