Proton Holdings Bhd is exploring the possibility of assembling battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Kazakhstan, a Central Asian country known for its growing automotive industry. The Malaysian automaker is considering assembling its e.MAS series of BEVs in Kazakhstan, following the successful launch of its first BEV model, the e.MAS 7, in Malaysia last year. The e.MAS 7 is based on China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group’s Galaxy E5 model and has already been exported to markets like Nepal and Trinidad and Tobago.
Representatives from Proton recently visited Kazakhstan and met with government officials, including Industry Minister Yersayin Nagaspayev, to discuss potential opportunities for local assembly of BEVs in the country. The Ministry of Industry in Kazakhstan confirmed that Proton presented plans to produce electric cars under the e.MAS brand, with a focus on production sites, export opportunities, and compliance with technical and environmental standards of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
In a statement, the Ministry of Industry revealed that Proton and the government have agreed to establish a joint working group to develop a strategy for localizing production and setting up joint investment projects. Kazakhstan produced over 134,000 passenger cars in 2024, and major international brands like GM-Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, JAC, and Jetour have manufacturing operations in the country. Additionally, two new plants are set to begin operations in Almaty and Kostanay this year, further boosting the country’s automotive industry.
As of May 2025, Kazakhstan had sold 9,400 BEVs, indicating a growing demand for electric vehicles in the country. With Proton’s interest in assembling BEVs in Kazakhstan, the automotive market in the country is poised for further growth and development. The collaboration between Proton and the Ministry of Industry highlights the potential for expanding the production of electric vehicles in Kazakhstan and contributing to the country’s automotive sector.
In conclusion, Proton’s plans to assemble BEVs in Kazakhstan mark a significant step towards expanding its presence in the international market and contributing to the growth of the electric vehicle industry in Central Asia. The partnership between Proton and the Kazakh government signifies a strategic move towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions, aligning with global trends towards electric mobility.
