Proton, Malaysia’s first car company, recently inaugurated its new assembly plant dedicated to the production of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The ceremony was attended by the country’s Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, marking a significant milestone in the automotive industry.

Situated in the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV) complex in Tanjong Malim, the plant is set to commence full-scale vehicle assembly operations this month, just seven months after the groundbreaking ceremony in February 2025. Proton has invested MYR 47 million (US$ 10 million) in the first phase of the facility, with plans to scale up production to 45,000 BEVs per year.

The first model to be assembled at the AHTV plant is the Proton e.MAS 7, based on Geely technology and launched locally in December last year. Following this, the Proton e.MAS 5 will also be produced at the plant, with plans to introduce premium models under Geely’s Zeekr BEV brand in the future.

The new plant, designed and built in collaboration with technical partner Geely, features advanced production lines and specialized equipment for efficient manufacturing. Proton’s CEO, Dr. Li Chunrong, expressed excitement about the plant, stating that it signifies a historic milestone for Proton and Malaysia’s automotive industry. He emphasized the focus on producing world-class electric vehicles and the commitment to a sustainable future.

In addition to the manufacturing facility, Proton is also actively engaging in industry recognition through the Just Auto Excellence Awards. These awards celebrate innovation, leadership, and impact in the automotive sector. By participating in the awards, companies can showcase their achievements, elevate their industry profile, and position themselves as leaders in driving advancements in the automotive industry.
