The latest data from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) reveals that renewable energy sources accounted for over 90% of new electrical generating capacity added in the US in 2024. Solar energy alone contributed to more than 81% of this new capacity, solidifying its position as the dominant source of new energy installations for the 16th consecutive month.
In December 2024, 105 units of solar totaling 4,369 megawatts (MW) were added, along with two units of wind (324 MW) and two units of biomass (45 MW). These renewable sources made up 86.9% of all new generating capacity for the month, with natural gas providing the remaining balance.
Throughout the year, solar and wind added 30,816 MW and 3,128 MW, respectively. When combined with hydropower, biomass, and geothermal steam, renewables accounted for 90.5% of added capacity. This growth significantly outpaced additions from natural gas, nuclear power, coal, and oil.
The increasing share of renewables in the US energy mix is evident in the data. Solar and wind now constitute almost 22% of the country’s utility-scale generating capacity. When small-scale solar installations are included, renewables make up about one-third of total generating capacity.
The rapid growth of solar energy is especially noteworthy. Solar capacity has increased tenfold in the past decade, with solar and wind now representing 21.9% of total installed utility-scale generating capacity. FERC’s projections indicate that solar will continue to expand, potentially surpassing coal and wind to become the second-largest source of US generating capacity in the near future.
Despite efforts by the previous administration to undermine renewable energy, the data shows that clean energy sources are resilient and continuing to grow. The forecast for the next three years suggests that solar will play a significant role in expanding the country’s renewable energy capacity.
In conclusion, the shift towards renewable energy in the US energy sector is undeniable. The data from FERC underscores the rapid growth of solar and wind power, highlighting the increasing importance of clean energy sources in the country’s energy landscape. With continued investments and policy support, renewables are poised to play a leading role in shaping the future of energy generation in the United States.
