Rivian, the American automaker, is making significant progress with the development of its R2 validation builds. RJ Scaringe, the founder and CEO of Rivian, has been consistently updating enthusiasts with exciting news and images of the company’s latest innovations. The recent focus has been on the Maximus drive unit, which will power the upcoming R2 electric vehicles set to hit the market next year.

In a recent social media update, Scaringe shared a closer look at the inner workings of the Rivian Maximus drive unit. This drive unit is designed to be more compact and cost-efficient, aiming to reduce the production cost per unit. The images shared by Scaringe showcase the new continuous winding technique used in the Maximus drive unit, which significantly reduces the number of welds required for the stator.

Compared to Rivian’s current Enduro drive unit, which requires 264 stator welds, the Maximus drive unit only needs 24. This design efficiency not only reduces costs but also improves performance. Scaringe expressed his excitement about the progress of the Rivian team’s work on the Maximus drive unit, highlighting the innovative features of the design.

One key feature of the Maximus drive unit is the side-mounted inverter, which utilizes flat areas at the end of the motor to minimize the length of bus bars, making them lighter and more efficient. The inverter chassis seamlessly closes out the oil-cooled motor cavity and efficiently routes coolant from the power modules to the drive unit’s heat exchanger. This design reduces the inverter part count by 41% compared to the Enduro drive unit, showcasing the team’s commitment to efficiency and innovation.

With Scaringe’s continued updates and insights into the progress of the R2 validation builds, enthusiasts can look forward to the visual evolution of Rivian’s upcoming electric vehicles. Stay tuned for more exciting updates from Rivian as they continue to push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology.
