SK On Company Ltd, a leading South Korean battery manufacturer, has recently announced a significant supply agreement with Slate Auto, an electric vehicle (EV) startup based in the US. This partnership further solidifies SK On’s position as a key battery supplier to the North American automotive industry.

Under the terms of the agreement, SK On will supply approximately 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of US-made nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries to Slate between 2026 and 2031, with the possibility of increasing volumes as needed. These batteries will power Slate’s newly unveiled electric pickup truck, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainable mobility and reducing emissions.

SK On, a subsidiary of the SK Group in South Korea, has made substantial investments to establish a strong presence in the North American EV supply chain. With two battery plants currently operational in the US and four more in development through partnerships with automakers like Ford Motor Company under the Blueoval SK joint venture, SK On is dedicated to delivering reliable, high-quality batteries to support the growing demand for electric vehicles in the region.

CEO of SK On, Lee Seok-hee, emphasized the importance of the partnership with Slate in leveraging the company’s US manufacturing capabilities to better serve innovative customers. He stated, “North America is a key market for us, and we are committed to delivering reliable, high-quality batteries that support our partners in making EVs more accessible, while reducing emissions and advancing sustainable mobility.”

This collaboration with Slate marks SK On’s strategic shift towards supplying batteries for more affordable EV market segments, complementing their previous focus on premium EV models. Slate’s CEO, Chris Barman, highlighted the versatility of their truck platform, which can transform from a 2-seater pickup to a 5-seater SUV, thanks to SK On’s innovative approach and partnership. Barman expressed gratitude for SK On’s support in helping Slate achieve their goal of delivering a radically affordable vehicle to consumers.
