Solid-state Mercedes EQS drives 749 miles without charging stop

Mercedes-Benz has made a significant breakthrough in electric vehicle technology with its latest prototype fitted with a solid-state battery. The Mercedes EQS, equipped with this revolutionary battery, recently completed a remarkable journey from Stuttgart, Germany, to Malmö, Sweden, covering a distance of 749 miles without the need for a single recharge. This achievement showcases the potential of solid-state batteries to revolutionize the electric vehicle industry.

The engineers at Mercedes took special care in planning the route for this test drive, considering various factors such as landscape, traffic conditions, and ferry crossings. The alternate route they chose added more than 100 miles to the journey, ultimately demonstrating the capabilities of the solid-state battery technology.

The solid-state battery used in the EQS prototype incorporates cells from Factorial Energy, a US-based company, and was developed in collaboration with Mercedes’ F1 facility in Brixworth, Northamptonshire. Despite being comparable in weight and size to a standard lithium-ion battery pack found in the EQS, the solid-state battery offers a 25% increase in energy capacity, enabling the car to achieve an impressive range of 749 miles.

One of the key features of the solid-state battery is its floating cell case with pneumatic actuators, which help manage the expansion and contraction of the cells during operation, enhancing their stability and longevity. Mercedes had initially projected a range of around 620 miles with the new battery pack, but the successful test drive surpassed expectations.

Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer at Mercedes-Benz, hailed the solid-state battery technology as a “gamechanger” that promises a new level of range and comfort for electric vehicles. He emphasized Mercedes’ commitment to bringing solid-state batteries to the market within this decade, aligning with the timeline set by Volkswagen Group, which also aims to introduce the technology by 2030.

While Volkswagen Group showcased its solid-state prototype on a Ducati motorbike at the Munich motor show, Mercedes’ successful test drive of the EQS prototype demonstrates the potential of this groundbreaking technology in real-world scenarios. The race towards commercializing solid-state batteries for electric vehicles is gaining momentum, promising a bright future for sustainable and high-performance transportation.
