The Base Mercedes-Benz GLC Has a Third Screen You Can’t Touch

Screens are becoming an essential part of modern vehicles, and automakers are constantly looking for ways to enhance the driving experience. One prime example of this trend is the new GLC from Mercedes-Benz, which comes equipped with three displays as standard. These include a 10.3-inch driver display, a 14.0-inch infotainment screen, and a third “digitally animated trim panel” all housed under one glass surface.

However, it’s worth noting that the third display in front of the passenger is not a touchscreen in the base model. To unlock the full potential of this display, drivers have the option to upgrade to the Hyperscreen setup, which turns the third display into a 14.0-inch touchscreen. For those looking for the ultimate display experience, Mercedes offers the seamless Hyperscreen, a continuous 39.1-inch display that spans the entire dashboard.

While it may seem odd for a luxury brand like Mercedes-Benz to offer a non-touch display in their vehicles, this decision could potentially open up opportunities for post-purchase upsells. However, the idea of putting essential functionality behind a paywall or subscription service may not sit well with customers expecting a seamless luxury experience.

Mercedes first introduced the Hyperscreen in the 2022 EQS as an optional feature, showcasing three displays under a single, dash-spanning piece of glass. This setup includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen in front of the passenger, providing a futuristic and tech-savvy interior for drivers.

Other automakers like Jeep, Lucid, and Porsche have also ventured into the realm of third displays in specific models, often adding a passenger display for enhanced convenience. However, despite the increasing size and functionality of these displays, they still face tough competition from the smartphones we carry in our pockets, which offer a wide range of apps and services at our fingertips.

In conclusion, the integration of multiple displays in vehicles is a growing trend in the automotive industry, with automakers constantly looking for ways to enhance the driving experience through advanced technology. While the idea of non-touch displays and paywalled features may raise some concerns among customers, it remains to be seen how this trend will evolve in the future.
