These sports cars were just axed, but EV successors are coming

The automotive industry is undergoing a significant shift towards electric vehicles, with many iconic sports cars making way for their EV successors. Porsche, known for its high-performance vehicles, has recently announced the discontinuation of its gas-powered 718 Cayman and Boxster models in preparation for the launch of their electric replacements next year. This move signifies a major step towards electrification for the luxury sports car brand.

The decision to cease production of the 718 Cayman and Boxster comes as no surprise, as Porsche has been hinting at an electric replacement for these models for some time. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume confirmed in 2022 that the electric successors to the 718 lineup would follow the Taycan and Macan EVs. While the new Cayman and Boxster EVs were initially expected to debut this year, delays in software and battery sourcing have pushed back their launch.

Interestingly, Porsche had initially planned to produce the electric versions of the 718 alongside the current ICE models at its Zuffenhausen plant. However, recent reports suggest that this will no longer be the case, with the luxury sports car maker opting to focus solely on EV production for these models. Additionally, Porsche has scaled back its EV plans, with ICE versions of the Macan and Cayenne set to be sold alongside their electric counterparts.

Porsche isn’t the only automaker making bold moves towards electrification. Audi has also confirmed the discontinuation of the A7 and S7 models after the 2025 model year, with the new A6 TFSI set to take their place. The RS7, on the other hand, will continue to be offered as a 2026 model. Audi’s decision to shift towards EVs reflects a broader industry trend towards sustainable mobility solutions.

Both Porsche and Audi have adopted a more flexible “multi-energy” strategy in response to changing market dynamics and evolving consumer preferences. This strategic shift comes at a time when the automotive industry is experiencing a significant transformation towards electric mobility. With the transition to electric vehicles gaining momentum, it’s clear that traditional sports car models will soon be replaced by their electrified counterparts.

In conclusion, the discontinuation of iconic sports car models like the Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster signals a new era for the automotive industry. As automakers pivot towards electric vehicles, we can expect to see more iconic models making way for their EV successors in the coming years. The shift towards electrification represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future for the automotive sector.
