Hyundai is gearing up to introduce the IONIQ 3, their latest electric vehicle, at the Munich Motor Show in early September. This new EV is expected to be more affordable than the Kona Electric while offering advanced features that set it apart from its predecessors.
According to Hyundai Europe’s CEO, Xavier Martinet, the IONIQ series is quickly gaining traction in the EV market, positioning itself as the number two EV brand behind Tesla. The IONIQ 3 will complement the existing lineup, slotting in between the Inster EV and Kona Electric models. With a starting price expected to be around £34,995 ($47,000), the IONIQ 3 aims to be a competitive option in the affordable EV segment.
The IONIQ 3 is projected to come with two battery pack options – 58.3 kWh and 81.4 kWh – offering a WLTP range of approximately 260 to 365 miles. Unlike some of Hyundai’s other models that utilize an 800V electrical system, the IONIQ 3 will feature a more cost-effective 400V setup.
Inside, the IONIQ 3 will showcase Hyundai’s latest software and the new Pleos operating system, delivering a user-friendly interface akin to a smartphone. To streamline production costs, Hyundai plans to manufacture the IONIQ 3 at its Turkish plant, emphasizing their commitment to expanding their presence in the EV market.
While the IONIQ 3 may not make its way to the US due to import tariffs, Hyundai continues to offer a range of affordable EVs. The company also plans to diversify their lineup with gas-powered, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and fully electric (EV) vehicles, as well as extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) that utilize a gas engine to power the battery.
The Kia EV3, a popular electric vehicle in Europe and the best-selling retail EV in the UK, has set a high bar for Hyundai to surpass with the IONIQ 3. With Hyundai’s history of competitive pricing and innovative technology, the IONIQ 3 is poised to make a significant impact in the EV market. Stay tuned for more updates as Hyundai prepares to unveil the IONIQ 3 at the upcoming Munich Motor Show.
