Nissan’s New $17,000 EV Making Waves in China
Nissan has recently introduced its new electric vehicle, the N7, in China, with a starting price of just under $17,000. The response to the N7 has been overwhelmingly positive, with over 10,000 orders secured in just 18 days after its launch. This makes it the fastest joint venture pure electric car to reach this milestone in China. The numbers have only continued to climb, with a total of 17,215 orders received in the first month on the market.
The N7 comes with two battery options – 58 kWh or 73 kWh – offering a CLTC range of up to 540 km and 635 km, respectively. The electric sedan is available in three trims – Max, Pro, and Air, catering to a wide range of buyers. Interestingly, 70% of N7 buyers are new to the Nissan brand, particularly younger families under the age of 35.
Measuring slightly longer than the Tesla Model 3, the N7 boasts a sleek design and advanced features. Inside, drivers can enjoy a 15.6″ central infotainment system that can transform into an in-home theater. The car is also equipped with Momenta’s autonomous driving technology, providing high-speed navigation assistance, full-scenario parking, and other safety features.
Despite the competitive market in China, Nissan is confident that the N7 will be profitable even at its lower price point. The company plans to export the N7 to other global markets, although specific details are yet to be confirmed.
With the launch of the N7, Nissan aims to turn its fortunes around in China, where it has been facing challenges. The N7 is just the first of nine new energy vehicles that Nissan plans to launch by mid-2027. The company is hopeful that the N7, along with its upcoming electric vehicles, can help it recover from recent setbacks.
As Nissan navigates through its restructuring phase, the success of the N7 will be crucial in determining the company’s future trajectory. With competitors like Mazda also making strides in the electric vehicle market, Nissan’s response will be closely watched. Only time will tell if the N7 can truly spark a comeback for Nissan in the EV space.
