Those reporting BYD overtook Tesla as top global electric vehicle maker are wrong

In recent weeks, there has been a lot of buzz about Chinese automaker BYD surpassing Tesla as the world’s largest seller of electric vehicles. While this may be true in terms of revenue or units sold, there is another player in the electric vehicle market that often gets overlooked – Yadea. Yadea is a company that specializes in electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, and they outsell both Tesla and BYD combined.

Yadea may not compete with Tesla and BYD in terms of overall revenue, but they make up for it in sales volume. The company consistently sells more than 6-8 million electric scooters, bicycles, and motorcycles annually, surpassing the combined sales of the two automotive giants. In fact, Yadea recently celebrated the milestone of surpassing 100 million cumulative electric two-wheelers sold globally, highlighting the sheer scale and impact of electric two-wheelers on the market.

The media often overlooks Yadea when discussing the largest EV sellers, mainly due to an automotive bias that prioritizes four-wheeled vehicles over two-wheelers. However, electric scooters and bikes offer numerous advantages over cars, including being more energy-efficient, cheaper to buy and run, easier to maintain, and fitting seamlessly into urban lifestyles. For many urban commuters, especially in densely populated areas, electric two-wheelers are the most sensible, efficient, and affordable choice.

It’s essential to recognize the diversity of the global electric vehicle market and not get caught up in automotive tunnel vision. Companies like Yadea are not only quietly outselling industry giants but also providing practical mobility solutions that cater to the needs of millions of people. As the world moves towards electrification and sustainability, it’s crucial to acknowledge the role that electric two-wheelers play in providing affordable and convenient transportation options.

In conclusion, while Tesla and BYD may dominate the headlines, Yadea is quietly revolutionizing the electric vehicle market with its impressive sales figures and practical mobility solutions. As we strive towards a more sustainable future, it’s important to consider the impact of companies like Yadea and the role that electric two-wheelers play in shaping the future of transportation.
