Volkswagen, a renowned automaker, has faced criticism in recent years for making changes that were not well-received by customers. One of the key issues highlighted was the inclusion of flush door handles in their vehicles, which were deemed difficult to operate. However, in a recent interview with Deutsche Welle at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich, VW CEO Thomas Schäfer acknowledged the shortcomings of these handles and expressed a commitment to reverting to traditional door handle designs.
The company’s latest concept car, the ID. Every1, which was unveiled earlier this year, featured pop-out handles. Despite this, Schäfer clarified that the decision to incorporate these handles was made prior to the realization that they were not user-friendly. The upcoming production model of the ID. Every1, set to be released in 2027, is expected to adopt a more conventional door handle layout.
Models like the ID.4 and ID.7 also utilized flush handles due to their electronic release mechanism. However, VW encountered issues with the design, leading to a recall of nearly 100,000 units and a temporary halt in production. The root cause of the problem was traced back to improper waterproofing, which could potentially result in doors opening while driving.
Looking ahead, VW’s future models, such as the ID.2 Polo, are likely to feature more user-friendly door handle designs based on customer feedback. The automaker has recognized the importance of prioritizing customer preferences over aerodynamic efficiency gains achieved through flush door handles. Schäfer emphasized the significance of listening to feedback from customers, dealers, and the media to inform design decisions.
The transition towards traditional door handles aligns with shifting trends in the automotive industry. Concealed door handles, while sleek in appearance, have been subject to criticism for their operational challenges. In fact, customer complaints regarding hidden door handles were highlighted in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Initial Quality Study. Additionally, there are reports suggesting that China, a major car market, may consider banning fully concealed handles in the future.
Ultimately, the decision to revert to conventional door handle designs reflects a broader shift towards simplifying vehicle features and prioritizing user experience. While flush handles may offer aerodynamic benefits and aesthetic appeal, the focus on reliability and ease of use remains paramount. By prioritizing functionality over form, Volkswagen aims to address customer concerns and enhance the overall driving experience for its users.
