Volkswagen Group has recently announced the renewal of its partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for another five years to enhance its factory cloud, Digital Production Platform (DPP). The DPP, a collaboration between AWS and VW Group, plays a crucial role in refining manufacturing processes across the global production network of the automaker.
By integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations, VW Group aims to improve production efficiency, cost effectiveness, and accelerate the introduction of new vehicle models to the market. The DPP is currently operational in 43 VW Group locations spanning North and South America, as well as Europe. This platform serves as a digital link facilitating seamless data exchange throughout the process chain, including order intake, logistics, and manufacturing. It also enables the standardized rollout of new IT systems across VW Group’s factories.
AWS’s cloud services are instrumental in hosting VW Group’s critical production systems, thereby reducing the risk of production line disruptions. With over 1,200 AI applications for software development and quality control enhancements, VW Group leverages AWS’s Amazon SageMaker to train AI models and develop industrial computer vision applications, resulting in improved quality control and cost savings.
The DPP also paves the way for the introduction of software-defined vehicles (SDVs), where software plays a significant role in managing and updating vehicle functionalities. This platform is expected to facilitate the direct deployment of software during the manufacturing process.
VW’s collaboration with Rivian Automotive is influencing the development of new electronics architecture and vehicle software. The AI solutions developed, such as KI4UPS and their corresponding data models, will be adaptable to future electronics architecture, enabling VW to leverage rapid development cycles in its production environment.
Kathrin Renz, AWS Industries vice president, emphasized the importance of the extended collaboration, stating, “Our five-year extended collaboration combines AWS’s cloud infrastructure and purpose-built IoT and machine learning services with Volkswagen’s manufacturing expertise. Together, we’re fast-tracking AI solutions that will help unlock new levels of innovation throughout Volkswagen Group’s manufacturing operations.”
In a recent development, VW Group China announced plans to expand the application of its “zonal” electrical/electronic architecture, the China Electronic Architecture (CEA), co-developed with local EV maker Xpeng.
Overall, the collaboration between Volkswagen Group and Amazon Web Services is aimed at driving innovation and efficiency in manufacturing operations, leveraging AI and cloud technologies to enhance production processes and bring new vehicle models to market more swiftly.
