SAIC Motor, China’s largest vehicle manufacturer, has recently signed a strategic agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Company Limited (CATL) to enhance their collaboration in the development of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This partnership aims to strengthen various aspects of their cooperation, including the advancement of new technologies, battery aftermarket services, and global expansion efforts.

As part of the agreement, SAIC Motor has designated CATL, the world’s leading EV battery manufacturer, as its preferred supplier of batteries. The company will prioritize the use of CATL’s Qilin and Shenxing batteries in its electric vehicles, with a focus on customizing these batteries to meet SAIC Motor’s specific requirements.

In the realm of aftermarket services, SAIC Motor and CATL will collaborate on the development of innovative battery-swapping solutions and the expansion of charging networks. Additionally, they will work together on initiatives related to battery recycling, repurposing, and even the used car market.

One key area of focus for the partnership is the battery swapping business. SAIC Motor and CATL plan to ensure that SAIC’s EVs are compatible with CATL’s swappable battery systems, while CATL and its affiliates will offer battery leasing and swapping services to support this ecosystem.

Furthermore, CATL will utilize its global resources to assist SAIC Motor in its international expansion efforts, including the establishment of after-sales service networks in overseas markets.

CATL recently introduced standardized battery sizes for its Choco-Swap battery swapping stations, in collaboration with nearly 100 partners. This move signifies CATL’s commitment to expanding its battery swapping network across China and further solidifies its position as a leader in the EV battery market.
