Tesla has recently provided an update on the progress of its Tesla Semi factory in Nevada, confirming that it remains on track for volume production of the electric semi truck in 2026. The Tesla Semi was initially slated for production in 2019, but various delays have pushed back the timeline.
Over the past two years, Tesla has been diligently working on constructing a new factory adjacent to Gigafactory Nevada, where it currently manufactures battery packs and drive units for the majority of its electric vehicles in North America. The latest update from Tesla indicates that the factory construction has been completed, and the focus has now shifted towards deploying the production lines.
While Tesla had previously aimed for volume production by 2025, the company is now targeting the commencement of production towards the end of this year, with plans to ramp up production in the following year. Tesla has reiterated its production capacity goal of 50,000 units for the Tesla Semi.
However, there have been reports of further delays and a significant price increase for the electric truck program. Ryder, an early Tesla Semi customer, has stated that they now anticipate receiving their first trucks later in 2026, with the price having increased substantially. This has led them to scale back their pilot program from 42 to 18 Tesla Semi trucks.
The original pricing for the Tesla Semi, announced during its unveiling in 2017, ranged from $150,000 for a 300-mile range truck to $200,000 for the “Founder’s Series Semi.” Despite speculation about price increases, Tesla did not update the prices when launching the production version of the truck in late 2022.
As Tesla continues to make progress towards the volume production of the Tesla Semi, it will be interesting to see how the company addresses the delays and price increases that have been reported. The electric truck market is rapidly evolving, and Tesla’s entry into this space is highly anticipated. Stay tuned for further updates on the Tesla Semi and its production timeline.
